April 06
Tartan Day (and Tartan Week)
The date - April 06 - commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which asserted Scotland's sovereignty over English territorial claims, and celebrates Scotland and the Scottish heritage in North America.
Feudal Europe accepted the concept that authority flowed down from the Crown, whereas Scotland clearly held that rights flowed upward from the people.
The noblemen of Scotland petitioned the Pope, to ask for his influence in having King Edward II of England [who had been beaten by the Scots at Bannockburn in 1314] desist in unjustifiable claims over Scotland; underlining the peoples' commitment to be and remain free.
"National Tartan Day" was pioneered in Canada, where it has been celebrated since 1992, and gained momentum in 1998 when the United States Congress and Senate passed resolutions recognising the day.
Since 2002, the New York Tartan Day Committee has been promoting "Tartan Week".
